Dear DJUSD Families, Staff and Students,

We are excited to welcome our DJUSD students, families and staff back for the start of the 2023-2024 school year! A big thank you to our staff who worked throughout the summer and in the past weeks to get our campuses and classrooms ready for students.

We have much to anticipate and celebrate this year – starting with our newly Board-adopted DJUSD Strategic Plan 2023-2028, which will guide our collective work in support of student learning. We partnered with hundreds of students, staff, parents and community members to develop a strategic plan centered on four goals:

Goal #1 - Student Well-being and Belonging. Every student will experience a positive and inclusive school community, characterized by a climate of belonging that nurtures agency and social-emotional, physical and mental well-being.
Goal #2 - Equitable Access and Opportunity. Every student will have equitable access to inclusive, proactive, and flexible systems of support, experiences, and resources necessary to close opportunity gaps and attain academic and personal milestones.
Goal #3 - Student Engagement and Continuous Academic Growth. Every student will identify educational goals, acquire the foundational skills, and demonstrate continuous growth toward realizing their academic potential.
Goal #4 - Confident Graduates, Prepared for Life. Every graduate will transition confidently to post-secondary life, prepared by diverse learning experiences and their acquisition of the competencies in DJUSD's Graduate Profile.

We are excited to see what is possible in DJUSD, as we align our work across the District. Speaking of alignment, the largest group of instructional staff in DJUSD history attended the same training at the same time this past week. More than 650 staff members, including teachers, paraeducators and other instructional support staff attended a training focused on Universal Design for Learning facilitated by our partners at CAST. Another tremendous thank you to all our educators who came back to work a couple of days earlier to participate in this training to focus on improving their instructional practices.

District Students and Shoutouts
We have much to celebrate in DJUSD, and we encourage our families and students to recognize DJUSD staff members or students for their outstanding achievements or contributions to our District. Please use this form to nominate them for recognition.

School Campus and Home Safety
As we kick off the new school year, it is important to remind our DJUSD community about safety and the policies we have in place to ensure that we know who is on our campuses at all times. DJUSD staff will wear their identification badges, and parents, guardians and visitors are required to check-in at the school’s front office to obtain a visitor badge prior to entering any school site. We also ask that student(s) are dropped off at school-designated locations, and that adults do not congregate on campus without checking in at the front office.

Other safety measures include doors remaining closed and locked with lock blocks engaged throughout the school day.

Also, as part of our safety reminders, we ask that any and all firearms always remain securely stored in your homes at all times to prevent small children and others from accidentally accessing the firearm(s) and unintentionally causing a tragedy.

We would like to remind our families to opt in to receive DJUSD text messages as an additional way of staying informed about District emergencies. We may also send additional text messages to notify families of important school information.

To receive text messages from DJUSD, please follow these steps to opt in. If you opted-in in previous years, you do not need to opt-in again.

Partnering in Attendance
As you may know, our District funding is primarily tied to student attendance. Prior to the pandemic, our student attendance rate was approximately 96 percent and, last year, it dipped slightly below 92 percent. Each one percent of student attendance equals one million dollars of revenue to DJUSD. These funds are critical to cover operating expenses and compensate our staff. As a result, we want our students to stay home when they are sick and be at school on days when they are well. Please review the District Attendance webpage for additional information on attendance policies.

COVID Information
We ask that illness due to COVID-19 be reported to the attendance office just as with other illnesses. The “Is my student too sick to attend school? provides guidance on when to keep your student home due to illness. Daily notification of COVID-19 exposures will no longer be distributed to parents/guardians/staff.

Students and staff are welcome to wear masks and are recommended to do so for 10 days after an exposure. Masks are available in all school offices, and COVID-19 tests were sent home with all students in June with guidance to test prior to returning to school. Free COVID-19 tests are available in all school offices and at the Yolo County Library, Mary L. Stephens (Davis) branch.

National School Lunch Program - Apply Now - It’s quick and easy
We encourage all families to complete the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) application, whether you think you qualify or not as the number of applications affects our District’s funding. This school year, due to California’s supplemental Universal Meals Program, all DJUSD students will receive free meals regardless of eligibility.

By completing the application your student may be eligible for:

Discounts on high-speed internet connection through the Federal Affordable Connectivity Program
Fee waivers for college applications
Subsidies or discounts for programs like the Davis Kids Klub (DKK)
College savings account eligibility under the California Kids Investment and Development Savings (CalKIDS) program
Pandemic-Electronic Benefits Transfer (P-EBT) eligibility

Fewer qualifying students could mean a loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars for our students for years to come. We appreciate your assistance in completing the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) application.

Declining Enrollment in DJUSD and the State of California
While we have much to be excited about as we kick off our school year, it will not be without challenges. DJUSD continues to face declining enrollment, as are many districts throughout the state. We are currently serving more than 300 fewer students than we did prior to the pandemic. This is primarily a result of declining birth rates, high housing costs and low housing supply. Declining enrollment, coupled with lower attendance rates post-pandemic, are negatively impacting our budget in 2023-2024 and beyond.

Bond News - STEM and SOLAR construction
We will continue to see extensive construction throughout the District over the next few years. Thanks to our Davis voters and the passage of Measure M, we will see the completion of a new STEM building and aquatic center at Davis Senior High School, solar arrays at nearly every site in the District, new Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten classrooms at all elementaries as well as much- needed technology infrastructure and safety improvements.

Transitional Kindergarten Expansion
Our newly expanded Universal Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program provides all children with access to an early learning experience that is designed to ignite a love of learning and nurture young minds. Visit our Enrollment website for more information and to enroll your student.

DJUSD Staffing Updates - We are Hiring!
We have been busy this summer hiring new staff for positions throughout the District. If you, or someone you know is interested in working part or full time with our amazing students and staff, please check out our current classified and certificated job postings to join the DJUSD family. We continue to have a high need for paraeducators, and we have positions open at several sites.

Transitioning from Summer Break to School
This is an important time to reassess our wellness routines and take care of ourselves during this transition from summer to a busy school year. Our Mental Health & Wellness website has great information to support your student’s return to school, and school counselors are available for you if you would like to discuss the mental health or social-emotional well-being of your student. You can also submit a Social Emotional Support form to initiate contact with school staff.

Native American and Indigenous Students and Families
Our Native American Education and Title VI Program focuses on maintaining a strong cultural foundation and improving educational outcomes for our Native American students and Indigenous students. If your child has Native American or Indigenous heritage, and you would like for them to participate in the Native American Education and Title VI Program, please contact Monica Shiel, program coordinator at [email protected], or Kate Snow, District climate coordinator, at [email protected] for more information.

DJUSD Board of Education Meetings
The Board of Education meets at the Davis City Hall at their regularly scheduled board meetings posted on the DJUSD website. Our community may attend in person or watch virtually through a live stream. Public comments may be shared in-person at the meetings. The next regular meeting of the Board of Education will be on Thursday, September 7, 2023 and can be viewed at 6:30 p.m. on DJUSD Education Channel 17 and by livestream, or you can watch archived recordings at djusd.tv.

Estimadas familias, personal y estudiantes del DJUSD,

¡Estamos muy contentos de dar la bienvenida a nuestros estudiantes, familias y personal de DJUSD para el inicio del año escolar 2023-2024! Muchas gracias a nuestro personal que trabajó durante todo el verano y en las últimas semanas para preparar nuestras escuelas y aulas para los estudiantes.

Meta #3 - Participación estudiantil y Crecimiento Académico Continuo. Cada estudiante identificará metas educativas, adquirirá las habilidades fundamentales y demostrará un crecimiento continuo hacia la realización de su potencial académico.
Meta #4 - Graduados seguros, preparados para la vida. Cada graduado hará la transición con confianza a la vida postsecundaria, preparada por diversas experiencias de aprendizaje y su adquisición de las habilidades en el Perfil de Graduado del DJUSD.

Estamos entusiasmados de ver lo que es posible en el DJUSD, a medida que alineamos nuestro trabajo en todo el Distrito. Hablando de alineación, el grupo más grande de personal educativo en la historia del DJUSD asistió a una capacitación la semana pasada. Estudiantes del Distrito y Reconocimientos

Seguridad en el Campus Escolar y en el Hogar
Al comenzar el nuevo año escolar, es importante recordarle a nuestra comunidad DJUSD sobre la seguridad y las políticas que tenemos para asegurarnos de saber quién está en nuestros campus en todo momento. Disminución de las Inscripciones en DJUSD y el Estado de California
