New Ad Hoc Committee

We thank the many individuals who expressed interest in being part of this effort.

Purpose

Recent revelations of abuse and assault by labor rights activist and co-founder of the United Farm Workers César Chávez have shocked and disturbed our community. This news is especially impactful for the César Chávez Elementary (CCE) school community. At its April 2, 2026 meeting, the DJUSD Board of Education agreed to form a committee and a call for interested applicants to serve on a committee that would provide recommendations to rename the school before the end of the 2025-26 school year.

Committee Details

Board Policy 7310 will guide the work of the 15-member ad hoc committee as they review suggestions and develop a recommendation(s) for a new name for César Chávez Elementary. The committee will operate independently, and District staff will be available to support the needs of the chairperson with logistics or other matters that arise.

The Ad Hoc Committee will forward its recommendation(s) along with background and rationale to the Superintendent by May 26, for preparation to post to the Board Agenda. The Board of Education is expected to consider the Ad Hoc Committee’s recommendation(s) and make a final decision on a new name at its June 4, 2026 meeting, allowing time for the change to be effectuated for the start of the 2026-27 school year.

If you have an idea for renaming the school, please submit your idea and rationale at Renaming CCE Suggestion Form (Spanish form).  All suggestions will be shared with the committee for consideration.

This form will close at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 26.
