Davis, Calif. - (December 17, 2021) -- The Davis Joint Unified School District Board of Education voted unanimously to approve a resolution celebrating Juneteenth Independence Day and designating June 19, 2021, and June 19 of each year thereafter as a local DJUSD holiday to honor and reflect on the significant role that African Americans have played in United States history, and how they have enriched society through their steadfast commitment to promoting unity, equality and justice.

“We continue to focus on creating equitable outcomes for the 8,300 students in DJUSD, and it is critical to recognize the contributions of Black Americans, as our American story has regularly been devoid or dismissive of the phenomenal contributions of Americans of color. We do this so that our diverse student body can see themselves more accurately in the rich fabric of our American history and reach their full potential,” says DJUSD Interim Superintendent, Matt Best.

“On behalf of the entire Board of Education, we are thrilled to adopt this Resolution,” says DJUSD Board President, Tom Adams. “As a District, we are committed to celebrating the past, present and future of Black liberation and those who work toward that liberation every day.”

In addition to designating June 19 as a holiday, the resolution is designed to:

  • Serve as a constant reminder to continue our work toward eliminating racism, racial bias, and educational disparities within DJUSD

  • Provide an opportunity to fulfill our commitment to increased training and curriculum content development in all school disciplines that recognize the impact, achievements, and contributions from African American/ African Diasporic staff, teachers, administrators, and students to the Davis community at large throughout the year
