Dear DJUSD Community:

We hope this communication finds you and your families well, and that you are enjoying some much-deserved relaxation and fun this summer. We are sending this communication to share several staffing updates and to let you know we are excited about the start of the 2021-22 school year and having your student back on campus or learning online with us on August 25, 2021.

Farewell
Serving the students, staff and families of the Davis Joint Unified School District for the last five years has been a true privilege and honor, especially during the last 18 months of the pandemic. The pandemic has surely placed a finer point on being with and caring for family. With that in mind, returning to Southern California has become a priority and, beginning August 9, I will begin serving as the Superintendent of the Manhattan Beach Unified School District. We have much to be proud of in Davis Joint Unified, and we have made excellent progress in the last five years in a number of important areas.

Our efforts to further our commitment to equity include our DJUSD We All Belong Resolution, the realignment of our Local Control and Accountability Plan to serve those students furthest from opportunity and the development of our Ethnic Studies program. The launch of our Multi-Tiered System of Supports, recognition by the state for our model Special Education inclusion program, and the revamping of our Career Technical Education program all support meeting the needs of all students in the 21st century.

Thank you to the Davis community for the tremendous support of the 2016 Measure H parcel tax renewal that provides funding for the many excellent programs, staff and services that differentiate the DJUSD educational experience from that of other districts. The passage of the Measure M facilities bond allows us to ensure our students have access to much needed 21st century learning facilities on our campuses. There are a number of fantastic construction projection projects underway at our school sites, including multi-purpose rooms, science classrooms, tech hubs and a new preschool. These projects are coming in on time on under budget, and the timely refinancing of our facilities bonds will save Davis taxpayers 79 million dollars. Community support for the Measure G parcel tax for employee compensation keeps us competitive with neighboring districts and allows us to attract and retain talented teachers and other staff.

We will never forget the COVID-19 pandemic. Let me acknowledge our educators and staff who continue to put forth their very best effort to create engaging and safe classrooms for our students, both in distance learning and for our return to five day a week on-campus instruction. I also want to recognize and thank the parents, other family members and friends who had to put other parts of their lives on hold to support their child’s learning during this year.  Our bargaining association partners, the Davis Schools Foundation, our many PTOs and Boosters and a list of others too long to acknowledge have been tremendous supporters during the pandemic. Healthy Davis Together has been a tremendous partner during the pandemic, and their efforts and leadership have made it possible for our families and the Davis community to receive free COVID-19 testing at our school sites, helping to keep us all safe.

Last night, the Board of Education appointed Deputy Superintendent Matt Best as the Interim Superintendent while a nationwide search is underway. Please be assured DJUSD benefits every day from a committed and capable leadership team that will continue to ensure outstanding outcomes for our DJUSD students. Please join me in congratulating and supporting Superintendent Best in this well-deserved leadership role.

The future is bright for Davis Joint Unified School District. I am proud to have served you, and I appreciate the support and involvement you have shown over the years.

Introducing Interim Superintendent Matt Best
As noted above, I am excited to welcome Deputy Superintendent Matt Best as the Interim Superintendent, starting tomorrow, August 7, 2021. Matt will provide continued leadership and oversight of the District while the Board of Trustees conducts the formal superintendent search in the coming months. Many of you already know Matt, as he has devoted his career to the students and staff of DJUSD. You will hear more from Matt soon about his vision and plans for the coming school year.

The 2021-22 School Year is Around the Corner
DJUSD will start the new school year with five days a week in-person instruction for our students who are returning to campus. For our students who prefer not to return to their school site, we also will provide independent study options through our Davis School for Independent Study (DSIS), which provides several learning options, including a homeschool program and our new Virtual Academy. Enrollment is ongoing and interested students can visit dsis.djusd.net/virtual to learn more about our DSIS programs.

California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Guidance Related to Face Coverings and Vaccinations
We have been carefully monitoring the state’s evolving public health guidelines throughout the summer. Most recently, on August 2, the CDPH released its guidance, titled, “COVID-19 Public Health Guidance for K-12 Schools in California, 2021-22 School Year.” This new guidance requires all K-12 students and staff to wear masks indoors, regardless of vaccination status and unless exempt.

At this time, we are also incorporating multiple health and safety measures which can be found on the DJUSD COVID-19 webpage, found at www.djusd.net/covid-19, and the Safe Return to In-person Instruction Continuity Plan can be found here. Feedback to the safety plan can be sent to the [email protected] email.

Along with universal masking, we are continuing the following measures found in the DJUSD COVID-19 Safety Plan (CSP).

  • All student eating should occur outdoors
  • Students and staff should self-screen their health and stay home when ill
  • Students and staff should maintain hand hygiene and cough etiquette
  • Physical distancing will be encouraged as practical
  • Students and staff are encouraged to receive weekly saliva testing which will be available on most DJUSD campuses
  • Robust contact tracing, isolation and quarantine procedures - in order to enable rapid contact tracing, we encourage all parents of vaccinated students to provide a copy of their child’s vaccination card to the District Office prior to the start of school
  • All Covid-19 exposure should be reported to [email protected]
  • Enhanced ventilation (MERV 13 air filters and portable air purifiers)

We know there will be questions about these measures, and we will continue to share the most current CDPH guidance at DJUSD Board meetings and through these Constant Contact messages.

DJUSD also strongly encourages all staff and students who are able to be vaccinated, to get vaccinated before school begins. We will continue to work closely with Yolo County Public Health and Healthy Davis Together to host COVID-19 vaccine clinics on our campuses. More updates will be provided as additional information becomes available.

Be safe, be kind, and thank you again for the opportunity to serve this wonderful community.

John Bowes, Ed.D.
Superintendent

  • Toda exposición a COVID-19 debe informarse a [email protected]
